DEV BUILD 004

DEV BUILD 004 is here!

What's new?

- The virus (new enemy, environment decoration)
- New shield
- Light and heavy aerial attacks
- New dust vfx

It's been quite a while since the last update, there's a lot of small details to the virus that took a long time to develop. A lot of the tech can be reused for all future enemies thankfully. You probably noticed the bright things in the vines that I squish throughout the video, I call these "infection sacks" internally lol. A fun trope in any alien movie or game is to have really gross bulbous fleshy pods that burst, normally with some acidic substance flying out. These are especially satisfying to hit whilst running through the chambers, and they will drop some kind of collectable stuff later on.

Developing the new enemies was a good time to change some of the core combat mechanics, and one thing I've wanted to change for a long time is the shield. I once thought having it only face one direction was an interesting change to smash bros, but thinking about where this project is going and imagining the onslaught of all kinds of different enemies all at once, I felt omnidirectional was a better fit. Another change I am experimenting with is seperating light and heavy attacks to their own button, and introducing heavy aerials. I don't know if I will keep it this way, let me know if you like the change or not, but charging aerials is good fun, so that will be in the game in some form for certain.

I'm going to be taking a little break from RECURSOR development for about a month. I will be finishing an old project for release in the meantime. It's another game called ENTROPOLY, and has a lot of similarities to RECURSOR.

I hope you aren't thrown off by this announcement, I want to assure you that RECURSOR is never getting abandoned, but please understand it's very draining working on the same project for long periods of time by myself. ENTROPOLY is much smaller in scope, and was already close to being done, I'm just pushing it over the finish line. This will help RECURSOR anyways by giving me experience releasing a game and importantly making some money to help with development costs.

Thank you for following this journey :) x
