DEV BUILD 003

DEV BUILD 003 is here!

What's new?

- New environment art

... That's it... at least on the surface. As I said in the previous update I still had more components to refactor, so under the hood are brand new hitbox and ECB (environmental collision box) systems, plus objects now have much better inheritance, so adding new interactable objects is a breeze. There is also a pickup and throw item system implemented, but I haven't had time to make use of it just yet (expect that in 004).

With that said, creating this new environment art has been no small feat. Many hours have been spent meticulously tweaking pixels and surface angles too reflect light in just the right way. Here's some more screenshots to feast your eyes on

Throughout the years of developing RECURSOR, I've dabbled with various stories for the game, but had never landed on anything solid. Often they would demand too much work from me in my weaker areas (hand drawn animation and writing particularly). Obviously RECURSOR isn't a story driven game, all I really wanted was a backdrop that produces cool scenarios to fight stuff in. Now I finally have that backdrop! It's not particularly deep and philosophical, but it allows me to play to my strengths and most importantly gives me a firm direction to build the world of the game.

Essentially, there is an alien virus that has built a nest within this vast combat robot manufacturing and testing facility. You play as the last remaining combat robot, tasked with journeying to the heart of the nest, fighting manifestations on the way, and destroying it. Recursing is your secret weapon, allowing you to travel back in time whilst maintaining software updates and your experiences. (bit like Virus (1999) and Edge of Tomorrow mixed together)

In that last screenshot you probably noticed those red creepy crawlies. Those are examples of these manifestations, unfortunately they aren't quite ready yet, but expect them in the next update.

Finally there are 2 things I need to address. First is the tentative September release date. It's probably quite obvious if you've been following development that the game will not be releasing so soon. I think spring 2023 is a much more realistic date. Secondly I want to assure the backers who pledged for their level, upgrade and minigames ideas to be put in the game, that I have not forgotten you! These things are best done nearer the end when I know the full capabilities and limitations. You are more than welcome to discuss any ideas with me at any point. You can reach me on discord, twitter or kickstarter. When it's time to create these things I will reach out to you.

Peace and love <3
